Great King Sejong Episode 30

Following the drama from Episode 30 seems to late to understand the bigger picture about the whole story of The Great King Sejong Drama which broadcasted on KBS 2 in 2008. The drama is like a biography of King Sejong packed in the form of 86 episodes, so the story that we have to catch is longer than what we've left behind. Don't be worry, I'll try to explain the situations which relate to the previous episode in every story.

Here's the story about King Sejong, I will begin.

King Sejong is in his early adulthood when he's only a Royal Prince, Prince Choon Nyeong, with no authority to handle any state affairs as the 3rd son of King Taejong while The Crown Prince, Prince Yang Nyung, his brother and the 1st son has a big authority. Both Princes has different quality as a person, Prince Choon Nyeong is the man with the brain most of the time while The Crown Prince mostly rely on his fist. The government official and the people in Joseon often compare their ability when it comes to solve the nation problems. Most of people give the high favor to Prince Choon Nyeong instead of to The Crown Prince because Prince Choon Nyeong always solve problem with the wise and smart approach so it didn't need much sacrifice from people to get over the situations while The Crown Prince mostly shedding the tears,materials or even the life of people to make the situations settled. The King who also admit the ability of Prince Choon Nyeong can't defy his principle to make the 1st son as the heir of the throne, he often experience self-conflicted when the result shows that Prince Choon Nyeong is better than The Crown Prince but The King is the firmest man in Joseon on that time so he also try to suppress Prince Choon Nyeong so he won't take greater actions in the future.

In every step and actions that he made, Prince Choon Nyeong always lives under misunderstanding and suspicion of politicians, citizens, and also his family (Brothers, Mother or The Queen, and Father or The King). They afraid that Prince Choon Nyeong covets the position of The Crown Prince and everything that he has done for people is merely to show that he is more worthy of the throne. He never give up to make them understand that he only want to make the dynasty to be the better place for people to live without any ulterior motives. He can survive from each negative presumption because he has many people who always encourage him that he is doing the right thing, they are his mentor Lee Soo, his wife Sim Si, his friends and his 2nd brother, Prince Hyo Ryeong. The only weakness that Prince Choon Nyeong has is he can't proceed the physical torture as punishment.

The King was trying to test Prince Choon Nyeong by punishing him to do the execution of the rebels, whom he was persuade to surrender to the law but he end up failed. He choose to renegotiate than the death execution when he almost cut off the rebels head because Prince Choon Nyeong still believe that every wrongdoing can not solely be punished by torture or execution, people needs the benevolence of the ruler instead of the force from the ruler. After the failure of execution held by Prince Choon Nyeong, the rebels set up an ambush to kill The King. The ambush is a suicide action taken by the rebels because The King army can defeat the rebels. The furious King banished Prince Choon Nyeong and exile him to the Village in the borderline of Joseon, named Gyeongsung.

This 30 Episode begin with the scene of Prince Choon Nyeong hunt the wild boar together with the men of Gyeongsung. The setting is after two years the prince has been exiled. The officer from Bureau of Weaponry, Yi Chun who being ordered by the Min Brothers (Prince's Uncle, The Queen Won Kyung Brothers) to observe every move of Prince Choon Nyeong in Gyeongsung, however he can't understand why Prince Choon Nyeong have to be watch while his actions is more silent and calm. Yi Chun saw that the General in charge to Protect Gyeongsung, Choi Yundeok is forcefully confiscate the cow and grains from a house, Yi Chun assume Choi Yundeok doing as an injustice, Yi Chun ask Prince Choon Nyeong why he is not doing anything to confront the injustice in the village and Prince Choon Nyeong talk back and ask him "Why should I?". Yi Chun think that Prince Choon Nyeong already got his lesson in his exile to not meddling in the state affair, so the current Prince Choon Nyeong is powerless.

In the middle of the night, when Prince Choon Nyeong ride a horse around the village alone and take a rest in the border of the country he witness General Choi Yundeok tribute the cow and grains that he confiscated from Joseon citizen to the enemy or barbarian who reside closely with Gyeongsung in across country borderline. The tribute is given as the apologize symbol because the men of Gyeongsung have crossed the border while they are hunting the wild boar. It turns out that Yi Chun also witness what Prince Choon Nyeong see and in the early morning he came to The General house and seize him to bring him back to the capital so he'll be punished. Unexpectedly, the Gyeongsung citizens already make a huge commotion in front of The General house to protest Yi Chun actions, they don't want The General being captured. Temporarily give in, Yi Chun meet Prince Choon Nyeong in his house and ask for his testimony to the King so The General can be punished but once again Prince Choon Nyeong asking him "Why should I?". Yi Chun ask him back "Why The Prince who always act righteous let the Choi Yundeok doing what he has done?" and The Prince answer "You will see soon enough the reason why."

Prince Choon Nyeong with his eunuchs visit the country borderline and see Choi Yundeok is checking the wood barricade that was set up as the borderline and angry because the barricade loosely planted in the ground. He keep saying to his subordinate to check the border line over and over and warn them to secure the borderline carefully. Choi Yundeok realizes that Prince Choon Nyeong is observing him and approach The Prince. He is grateful Prince Choon Nyeong didn't give the testimony to the King about him and Prince Choon Nyeong disregard his thankful remark. Prince Choon Nyeong ask to The General.

Prince Choon Nyeong: "Why do you do this? You do all this work and no one appreciate you. You're always misunderstood and problems are endless. Are you content with this life?"

Choi Yundeok: "The people appreciate me. Misunderstandings will clear up eventually and problems just have to be solved."

Prince Choon Nyeong ask that as he reflect to himself and trying to learn from Choi Yundeok and Choi Yundeok back to his work as The General who protect the country borderline.


The story about King Sejong in episode 30 is up to this. The whole episode is not only telling about Prince Choon Nyeong but also about the Royal Family who struggling to overcome the jealousy and the grudge to each other, The Crown Prince and his current doing, The King and also the government official. However, the purpose of me summarising the story that all of people can watch in the drama is because I want to focus on the story of King Sejong and make a note for myself about him which I can read over and over.
